Roman Shutylo, commander of the Luhansk sapper team (Ukraine Emergency Services), in the village of Posad-Pikrovsâke, where he and his team have been working for three months clearing cluster submunitions. Originally from Luhansk, now occupied territory by the Russian forces, Roman has been a sapper for approximately 20 years with experience clearing ordinance from World War II, then the invasion of the Donbas in 2014. He and his team of five, all from occupied territory in Luhansk Oblast, have cleared ordinance in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson since the 2022 invasion, and have already tragically lost three comrades on missions due to plastic mines (undetectable by metal detectors). Roman is highly respected among all sappers in Ukraine. Posad-Pikrovsâke, Kherson Oblast, Ukraine, March 8, 2023.
